Before and After IS101, Beyond IS101 Ambition, How to Succeed in IS101 and Beyond?

In the middle of my twenty sixth (26) year of teaching part-time in higher education, twenty five (25) for IS101 Introduction to Information Systems, mostly at College of Southern Nevada (CSN) for the Computing and Information Technology (CIT) Department, I am still excited by the reward of raising the digital literacy level of my students.

The Spring 2025 semester will begin in one minute.

I began reaching out to each of the twenty two (22) students individually a week ago. At the time of writing this blog post, nineteen (19) have responded to me. Of them, twelve (12) have sent in their Bonus Quiz 1 - Syllabus. Of them, eight (8) have reach 100% on their BQ1 after fixing and re-submitting: Paulina, Noel, Katelyn, Yahir, Geraldine, Jorge, Skyla, and Angela. Kudos to Paulina for being the first to reach 100%. I look forward to seeing more students joining them before our inaugural classroom session this Saturday.

I have already receive partial work on A1 Accounts Setup and Professional Communication from Angela and Noel. Also published in [Day 1: 1/21/2025 - Getting Started] are
  • D1 Email Inbox Rule, Email Replies with Self-Tracking, Self-Introduction, and Self-Responsibility
  • The temporary activation code to LabSim for IS101-3205, valid until Tuesday, 1/30/2025, 11:59 pm
I look forward to further engaging my students before Saturday, 1/25/2025 morning. The official start time is 8 am, but I will be in the classroom 7 am -- for all Saturdays class sessions.

  1. (A) After doing some of the homework, I realized my digital literacy level is lower than I expected. I came in thinking I knew a lot, but that’s not the case. I’m looking forward to learning new skills and applying them at work.

    (B) I have an office job where we use Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, so having these certifications will help me in my role. If I wanted to move to another department, it’s something employers would look at. I would definitely pursue the expert-level MOS certification.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 and beyond by simply staying on top of my work and not waiting until the last minute to complete and turn in assignments. I will try to work ahead of the schedule.

  2. (A) My digital literacy is average compared to today’s fast-paced digital landscape. While I am comfortable using basic tools like email, social media, and productivity software, I recognize that many of the more advanced skills, such as coding, data analysis, or using complex cloud-based platforms, are areas where I could improve. While I can keep up with the essentials, I know that to truly thrive in today’s digital world, continuous learning and staying updated on new tools and trends will be crucial.

    (B) Earning Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications would significantly benefit in using Microsoft Office tools, which are widely used in both professional and personal settings. With MOS certifications, I could work more efficiently and confidently, knowing I have a deeper understanding of the software’s advanced features and capabilities. Having MOS certifications would also help me for future job opportunities by making me a more attractive candidate for roles that require a high level of technical competence.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101 by going the extra mile on my assignments and dedicating additional hours of effort, even if it means sacrificing some sleep. Since my digital literacy is weaker compared to other students, I know I’ll need to work twice as hard to catch up and stay on track. Adopting this mindset and understanding that success will require extra effort and persistence will be key in helping me succeed in the class.

  3. A.) I feel my digital literacy is above average, but it could be better as I have a basic understanding of common applications such as Excel, but not well utilizing it as I should be doing. I can figure out things with a Google search when needed, but it will be nice to finish this course gaining a lot more knowledge of things I would never guess of needing or would never know about if it weren’t for this course.

B.) Having a digital literacy course that includes Microsoft Office Specialist certificates would benefit me as a lot of employers use their applications in their everyday business operation. It shows that I know how to use Microsoft Office applications with confidence, and it will look great to stand out having it compared to the other job applicants that may not have it.

C.) I need to have self-discipline with doing things on time and not procrastinate as I typically do. I need to make sure I stay on track and get ahead of tasks when I can as it will make things easier for me. With this, I hope I can use this self-discipline to pass IS101-3205 and beyond to make me succeed in life.

  4. (A) Right now, I would say my digital literacy level is beginner. I can navigate basic features in Microsoft Office and online tools, but I know there is a lot more to learn, especially in using advanced functions efficiently. By the end of the semester, I hope to gain more confidence and proficiency in digital tools, making me more comfortable using them for business and personal tasks.

    (B) Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications would benefit me by strengthening my resume, making me more competitive in the job market, and improving my efficiency with Microsoft Office applications. These certifications would validate my skills and help me feel more prepared for business-related tasks. While I am currently focused on learning the basics, I am open to pursuing expert-level MOS certifications beyond IS101 if they align with my career goals in business.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 by staying organized, practicing regularly, and actively participating in class. I plan to complete assignments on time, ask questions when needed, and take advantage of any available resources to improve my skills. Staying consistent with my studies and applying what I learn to real-world scenarios will help me retain the information.

Beyond IS101, I will continue to build on my digital literacy skills by seeking additional certifications, practicing advanced features in Microsoft Office, and integrating technology into my business studies. Developing strong digital skills will not only help me in school but also in my future career, making me more efficient and competitive in the job market.

  5. A. Before completing IS101 course, I would like to think that my digital literacy level is slightly above average. I use multiple programs daily such as Outlook, Word, Excel, etc. I believe that I have a developed a good understanding of how each system operates, but I definitely still have more to learn.

    B. A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification would be very beneficial to me. A vital component of my work field is to have a developed knowledge of different computer systems and software. Having a MOS certification to add to my resume will help me stand out against the masses.

    C. In order to succeed in IS101, I intend to complete all work on-time, and even hopefully early. I will make sure that I understand each concept fully before moving on. I will also make sure that if I have any issues or if I am not fully understanding a concept, I will actively participate in asking for Professor Wu's assistance. Beyond IS101, I will continue to use the best practices for certain tasks in my daily use of each Microsoft program and help those around me become the most effective they can be when operating different programs.

  6. (A) I would say I have enough digital literacy to help me function in today's society and keep me current with technology, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. I can navigate social media and internet browsers without much difficulty. Even though I did grow up in the 90's and 2000's when computers were starting to be readily accessible, I was not often able to access one to grow my skills.

    (B) Having Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications would help my resume stand out to potential employers or if I decide to apply internally to higher positions at my current place of employment. Positions in management tend to spend more time using Microsoft software for meetings, emails and presentations.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101 by completing all assignments in a timely manner and reviewing lessons that I did not comprehend multiple times. In LabSim, if I cannot complete the task in what I think is a timely manner then I repeat them until I am satisfied that I can complete the task without hesitation. Beyond IS101, I will continue to work with Microsoft Office so I do not lose that which I am going to become proficient in.

  7. (A) My digital literacy has begun to grow, especially when it comes to using my email address and the tools provided in the settings. For example, creating a rule for certain emails and phrases was new to me.

    (B) Microsoft Office Specialist certificate (MOS) will benefit me as I would be able to show proof that I have literacy in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint when it comes to a new job, but this also benefits me personally as know I would be more knowledgeable in using these programs. If all goes well and I see that I am ready for the expert-level of (MOS) then yes, I would give it a go.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 by keeping my head up and trying to participate in all activities. I will ask the question when I am lost or confused to better clarify if I do not understand a section or a problem. I will try my best to come in at 7am to get the extra help and to do bonus quizzes. Lastly, I will respect the time I have for this class and make more time if needed to succeed in this class and use the knowledge and experience I used for the outside world.

  8. A. I believe my digital literacy is very strong as of now. I’ve been using technology for many years, mainly for a majority of my life. I definitely don't believe I’m an expert but I believe day by day, I’m getting closer to an expert level for my digital literacy.

    B. A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification would benefit me in many ways. It would provide me with the knowledge and the specifications I need to get into my dream company. One of the qualifications to work at my dream company, Riot Games, is to have a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certificate.

    C. I will succeed by completing all my assignments and reading ahead of time. I will also succeed by taking advantage of the opportunity my current job has provided me with so I can focus on my schoolwork and get the best grades possible. Beyond IS101, I will continue to take classes within this field and graduate with my Associate degree. This will grant me my wish of working at Riot Games!

  9. (A) My digital literacy is much higher at the moment than it was a month ago. I am doing things I never thought were possible for me. For example, I could not comment on this post without first having to go into my Google settings and enable third-party cookies. This task did not take me very long to figure out thanks to my work in LabSim.

    (B) Having a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification would benefit me by being able to get out of physical labor employment and being able to succeed in an office environment. I have never used Microsoft Office programs and feel it would surely improve my resume to better stand out to the potential employer.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 by pushing myself even when I think it is something I cannot do. I will make sure I complete every task and assignment. Beyond IS101-3205, I will succeed by applying what I have learned to my everyday work

  10. (A) My digital literacy level now, after starting the beginning of this class, is a little lower than I had thought earlier on before starting IS101.

    (B) Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications would benefit me as I will create businesses of my own in the future. I would like to pursue the expert-level MOS certifications next as it will continue my knowledge to be the most efficient in my work.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 and beyond by continuing to study the given information as I truly need, doing my best to understand the information and asking for help when needed and giving my best efforts in assignments and homework and turning them in on-time for the best grades possible.

  11. (A) My digital literacy can be classified as below average in today's world. I can find my way through basic computer software. I can navigate the web safely, browse the internet at a good pace, but occasionally I tend to do things the long way that can be done quicker and more effectively.

    (B) Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications would benefit me in multiple ways. I work with Microsoft programs at work, and it would give me an edge against my peers. If I ever decided to move elsewhere, it would look good in my resume. Not only that, but it would also make me more efficient in my daily tasks and I would eventually like to apply to my daily life to keep myself organized. I would ultimately love to pursue the expert-level MOS certifications because I see it as an accomplishment but more importantly, to prove to myself that I can do it.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 and beyond by asking questions and engaging with classroom material. I know that my current internet skills aren't the best, but practicing and putting them into play will improve my daily effectiveness beyond the classroom setting. Succeeding in IS101-3205 requires my effort as no one is there to baby me. Keeping a schedule is vital for effective use of time in the class and outside.

  12. (A) My digital literacy compared to today's world needs some work as I am not fully able to solve a difficult task in Microsoft applications. There are some dead ends I run into when I need a little help from the internet to resolve it. I wouldn't say I am a complete digitally illiterate because I know my way around a computer, phone, and the internet.

    (B) I was surprised to hear that we are able to obtain Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications through IS101, which made the course more interesting and gives me motivation to pass the course with a good grade. Having at least general MOS certifications would be a better reflection of my skills when mentioned in my resume but I am still deciding if I will be able to complete an expert level certification.

    (C) I believe that I will be capable of completing IS101-3205 with an "A" if I concentrate on submitting the assignments as soon as I can finish them, paying close attention to the class-wide email, and completing the discussions on time. Beyond the course, IS101-3205, I think what we learn in this course would not go to waste as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are used in a professional capacity as well as in academic life. The skills we gain from this course will be repetitive in our lives.

  13. A. I'd put my digital literacy level in today's world as above average. I know how to keep myself safe online, I can kind of work in Microsoft Office environments, although a little bit inefficiently. And I can work a computer perfectly fine, I don't really need to think about how to navigate certain things.

    B. A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification might be nice to keep in the back pocket. Considering I'm hoping to get into some kind of analyst position eventually having a professional certificate saying that "hey this guy knows how to write business docs" definitely won't hurt.

    C. To succeed in this class, I'm going to have to bring my homework to work considering the sheer amount of things we have to keep track of. But keeping it serious, I just gotta keep on top of dates.

  14. (A) I would say that my digital literacy would be classified as average, if not below average, when compared to others my age. I can navigate around a user-friendly application to personalize my settings, but once my computer starts to have issues I am completely lost with navigating the hardware or software.

    (B) I was very excited to hear that we are able to obtain our MOS certification in this class and has resulted in me having an extra motivation to focus. I use Excel every day at work and expect to use it often throughout my entire life. Being as efficient as possible on Excel will put me ahead of my peers, and the certification to prove it will be something nice to separate me from my peers.

    (C) I have no doubt that I'll succeed in IS101-3205, and I expect to earn an A by the end of the semester. I can do this with no issues as long as I stay focused and learn consistently each day to stay motivated. I hope to end the semester feeling like the knowledge and skills I learn from this class will stick with me throughout my whole career.

  15. A. In my opinion, my digital literacy is average. I can find my way around computing tasks, but there is still a lot that I do not know.

    B. Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications will help me build a strong rรฉsumรฉ, since Microsoft Office is one of the most widely used software suites. Having the certificate not only expands my knowledge but also proves my proficiency. Yes, I would like to proceed and obtain the Office Pro certificate as well. The video likely emphasizes how the Microsoft Office Specialist certification can help build or advance a career by validating essential software skills.

    C. I will make sure to be disciplined and consistent in my learning and lab work. The video is about success in life—particularly for students and young people in stems, The scientist says that success comes with curiosity, resilience in the face of failure, a commitment to critical thinking, and a genuine passion for learning. By questioning the world around you and staying receptive to new ideas, you can navigate challenges more effectively and continually grow.

  16. A. Throughout the first few classes, I realized that my digital literacy is average. Im not good and not terrible either, and I understand what I'm doing. Although there is always room for improvement.

    B. Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification could benefit me because I am in the hotel industry. I work front desk, by getting this certification, I have a higher chance of becoming a supervisor. The more skill I can put on my resume, the better. After IS101, I don't have any interest in pursuing MOS.

    C. I will succeed in IS101 by constantly checking my outlook email. I have realize early on with this class that it is important to do that. Also, time management is a huge factor in being successful, no matter what level. I need to be disciplined on how and when I do my assignments.

  17. A. My digital literacy is definitely better than most, but I do not think I am even close to the highest threshold possible not even in the slightest. Throughout this class, I have been humbled going throughout the LabSim work, but I cannot wait to continue being humbled learning new skills.

    B. A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification is something nice to say I have. Knowing that I could receive this during my time in this class, I am definitely trying to manage my time in order to actually understand the skills and the topics given to me in LabSim.

    C. To stay consistent and on top of things is definitely the foundation of how I am going to success in IS101-3205. I have been slacking slightly on my coursework as of now, but bringing my computer to work and having better time management should be the edge that I need in order to fully succeed in this class.

  18. (A) I knew some basic digital literacy because I had a computer class over a decade ago so, I would say I’m average compared to most. But learning new tricks and clicks is always a good skill.

    (B) Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) would look beautiful on my resume also, I can show it off like my Forklift Certification. We live in a digital world now so the more you know in digital, the more you’re updated and advanced. I will be working with Engineering Technology so I have to know how to use digital work. I would complete the expert level if I work with computers only.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 by continuing to do work and LabSim at work when I have downtime. I usually have an extra 2-4 hours at work (Wednesday-Saturday) to study and do homework. Going out of town to fix my cars issues set me back, but I’m catching up. I caught up with LabSim already, but I need to be advanced again how I was before.

  19. (A) My digital literacy is limited in my opinion. I think my parents (Gen-X) might actually have a better understanding than I do myself. I know how to use the basic options and tasks thanks to school, but as far as in-depth Word and Excel, I might be in trouble.

    (B) Becoming a Microsoft Office Specialist would be essential in my resume as I hope to go into marketing. The job market in marketing is definitely shifting, so I want to be as knowledgeable as I can in every area of it! Also, it's just so important to be aware of these programs because a lot of people don't really know how to use these programs, myself included, and I hope to change that!

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 by pursuing these tasks and keep pushing forward even when it gets difficult. Even if I don't want to do it, even if I am not the first person to accomplish it, or get a perfect 100%, I will keep reminding myself how important it is to be knowledgeable in all aspects of this class.

    ReplyDelete
  20. (A) From the start of this class, I felt that my digital literacy skills were good but now I realize that there are areas that I need to improve on more.

    (B) The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification would definitely help me when applying for jobs as it would improve the quality of my resume.

    (C) In order to succeed in IS101 I will need to make sure I keep track of my assignments, consistently check my email, and work on assignments before the due date.

    ReplyDelete
  21. A. My digital literacy now has definitely advanced from when I first started. I only knew the basics but I’m learning that Microsoft is a whole new universe with a small ribbon. I’ve learned to love and hate some skills but if I struggle with them that means I still have to learn more and keep going till I get it.

    B. For the position I’m going for at Amazon one of the eight basic requirements is 1+ years of Microsoft Office products and applications experience. Although I have that already but, having the Microsoft Office Specialist on my resume will definitely make me stand out because not everyone has that. Also, I’m not only stating it, its proof that I have that certification.

    C. Succeeding in IS101-3205 is doing work almost every day. LabSim is not that difficult but there is a lot of them. 1 chapter alone has 8-10 assignments so falling behind 1 chapter makes a huge difference, I can’t let that happen again. So, moving forward I need to do IS101 work everyday even if its just 1-2 hours but something is better than nothing.

  22. (A) My digital literacy has improved a lot. I have been able to apply skills learned from IS101-3205 to my daily life. I still have a lot to learn and hope to improve throughout the semester.

    (B) A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification would benefit me to have a skill to rely on and stand out from my competition. I currently have no ambition to pursue the expert-level MOS certifications.

    (C) I will succeed in IS101-3205 and beyond by practicing skills learned in the classroom. I will apply those skills to my daily life.

  23. A. I think I have a fairly good understanding of digital literacy. I have a small social media presence and have been online for so many years I do understand a lot. It might not be at a professional level but that is exactly where this class comes in, giving me the right tools to maintain a good reputation online.

    B. As someone who wants to open her own business eventually, MO will help me a lot in succeeding in handling my business, it's online presence, sales and all the data I would need to maintain it. I would like to challenge myself to do the expert level certifications if I could as well.

    C. Hard work and dedication. I think those two are the most important things because even if you don't understand something dedicating your time and effort will always guarantee success.
