Approaching the Finish Line, Enduring Ambitions, Reaching for the Stars

The last three weeks consisted of Phase 3: Performing (Creative) and the beginning of Outperforming/Actualizing. Picking off where the previous blog post off:

Bonus Quiz 11
Part A – The Internet, Granny, Bob, Vint, and Tim
BQ11 not only concluded the almost-semester-long arc that began with BQ2 but produced the only perfect score in the arc. This feat was accomplished by Jorge, well done SeΓ±or Lima!

A7 Mail Merge/Object Linking & Embedding (OLE) is the second of two capstone assignments from the set of signature assignments I have created and evolved in my past twenty-seven years of teaching in higher education and business world. This capstone assignment is about students developing independence by fulfilling a business need without having step-by-step instructions.

Chandler Donovan turned in a flawless A7. Upon my inquiry, the student with two first names shared with me that he has used mail merge before. Skyla, who has not been exposed to mail merge before, produced the same result with one simple but critical oversight. I hope these two top performers of A7 will do A9 Query Options and IF Statement, which is a direct continuation of A7.

Noam may have had a rough start at the beginning of the semester but she has been catching up, beginning with her A3 Slideshow Presentation. Buffering A3 and A8 Improved Slideshow Presentation is the recognition of the thirteen students who have participated at least once in the ten in-person bonus quizzes and two impromptu bonus opportunities thus far in the semester.

Paulina, Bezhan, and Ashley bedazzled the class with their optional A8 Improved Slideshow Presentation, employing what they learned from Chapter 6 Microsoft PowerPoint. Hmm... Paulina led in A3, now again in A8... Bezhan's passion for this topic brighten the classroom during the Q&A session after his presentation. Ashley impressed me with her witty and polished improved slideshow which required a few minute cosmetic fixings from me. Well done Ashley!

The top three performers of BQ2~BQ11 & IB1~IB2 are only separated by half a point in each of their total points ranking. BQ12 & BQ13 are always given as a pair and gave second & third place finishers the opportunity to join Jorge. I am proud of all students who showed up early to classroom on Saturday mornings to take bonus quizzes, especially the top three finishers for their enduring ambitions.

Bonus Quiz 12 – Microsoft Excel 365 and Spreadsheet Analysis
Bonus Quiz 13 – Apex of Excel

Christian alone earned the highest score on BQ12 while Dilanga alone earned the highest score on BQ13. When the two bonus quizzes are combined as a pair, both gentlemen tied.

Having to miss the final two class sessions due to returning to his home country of Sri Lanka, Dilanga completed tasks ahead of schedule. He was the first student from IS101-3205, Spring 2025 to qualify for, took, and pass the MO-310 PowerPoint certification exam becoming the first Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Associate.

Few days later, Chandler Donovan, Noel, and Christian followed suit, also ahead of schedule. In yesterday's penultimate class session, Katelyn, Ashley, Paulina, and Skyla joined the first quartet.

Dilanga, Chandler Donovan, and Christian began their pursuit of MOS Expert -- beyond the scope of IS101 -- with two receiving joy. Katelyn also expressed interest. I wish everyone success in their attempts and re-attempts in their pursuits.

Last night, I received A9 from Jorge.

As we approach the final class session this coming Saturday, I look forward to more students (a) earning their MOS Associates and/or more joy from MOS Expert, (b) using BQ14 & BQ15 to boost one's course grade, and (c) reaching for the stars with A9 and A10 Workbook Investigation even after our final class session :-)

My first capstone assignment, A6 Spreadsheet Analysis with Trailer, utilizes a brilliant article authored by then Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Chancellor James E. Rogers in justifying Do Faculty Work? during a time of budget vetting/cutting after the 2008 economic recession. I would like to share that article and his brilliance with the world:

Students,

Before commenting on this blog post, please first read the Mat Honan's Epic Hack article. Instead of using the link above and dealing with ads from the website, I have extracted the content into a PDF attached to Discussion 5 in Canvas for your ease of reading. Before you read that PDF, be sure to see Topics for Bonus Quiz 11 in [Week 11: 4/12/2025] to see which article in the PDF is required reading and which article is optional.

(1) After reading the Mat Honan's Epic Hack article, would you manage your accounts or passwords differently?

(2) How will you finish IS101-3205, Spring 2025 strong during our final week?

Please save your final thoughts, feedback, and well wishes for my next and final blog post ^_^

  1. I am extremely glad I do not have things linked together and use separate emails for different purposes, like personal, work, and spam. I also started using two-factor authentication for most accounts, even though at times I do find it annoying to constantly authenticate that it's really me entering the account, but seeing what Mat went through, I’d rather do that than make it easier for a person to hack my account with my digital footprints.

I know I will finish strong and complete everything that is required but I wish I had time now to do A9 and A10 but due to me studying to pass The Excel Expert MO-211exam I might have to give those assignments a go after I successfully pass because I can honestly say this one is a little more difficult than the Word Expert MO-111 due to nesting and using Macros.

  2. I think one of the main changes I’d make is enabling two-factor authentication whenever it’s available. I used to find it inconvenient, but after reading how Mat’s accounts were hacked in just an hour, I now realize how important that extra layer of protection really is. I’d also make it a priority to regularly back up important data and use a unique password for each account instead of reusing the same one.

I’ve been studying for the MO-211 exam whenever I have free time after catching up with my other class. The practice tests are challenging, but I’m doing my best to stay focused and give it my best shot.

  3. (1) After reading Mat Honan’s Epic Hack, I’ll definitely manage my accounts and passwords more carefully. It really opened my eyes to how vulnerable we can be if we reuse passwords or don’t enable two-factor authentication. I’m planning to use a password manager and turn on 2FA for all my important accounts to stay protected.

    (2) To finish IS101-3205 strong, I’m staying organized, catching up on anything I missed. I want to end the semester proud of the work I’ve done and the skills I’ve gained!

  4. It's awesome to see everyone's progress over the semester!

After reading Mat Honan's Epic Hack, I realized I am not as paranoid as I thought. I have been using two step verification for every account that offer it. I would often think, maybe I don't need the 2-step verification, it would make logging in so much longer. After reading his hack, I now realize it is for the safety of my privacy.

I feel like I am finishing IS 101 strong! I did struggle sometimes and doubted myself but am glad I pulled through and came out stronger :)

  5. After reading Mat Honan's Epic Hack article, I will definitely be changing my passwords, using two factor authentication, and creating another email address because right now I only have one. To finish IS101 strong, I plan to complete my discussion posts. Technically, I do not need to do them since I can still maintain my A without fixing the last two posts, but I will, but it's tempting.

  6. Mat Honan’s epic hack really hit me. Glad I don’t have all my stuff tied together, got separate emails for personal, work, and junk. I’ve got two-factor on most things too. I feel safer that way and it helps me keep some peace of mind.

What a great read, so cool to see everyone stepping up in different ways! Big shoutout to Chandler, Christian, and Dilanga for pushing ahead and setting the bar high.

  7. I am grateful that I read Matt Honan's article because I already had two-factor authentication enabled and was wondering if I should disable it because of the hassle it creates. After reading the article, I am glad I did not move on it. I would agree to having different passwords to access different accounts to be safer.

I am currently progressing on D7 Job Hunting, and when I complete that, I will be looking forward to doing the BQ15 to finish strong.

I am thrilled to see everyone doing their own thing to finish strong, and good luck on all your future endeavors!

  8. Managing passwords definitely is a must in this day and age. We have become dependent on quick logins and convenience when making passwords for multiple sites that can be easily hacked.

Finishing up my comments is how I am finishing strong in IS101.

  9. I could definitely be better with managing my passwords! The positive note is that I have two-factor authentication for pretty much every single account that I have. Bad news.... I tend to cycle through the same few passwords. I have come to the realization that this can make many accounts vulnerable even if just 1 of my accounts got hacked. I will definitely do better with coming up with more unique passwords.

I am finishing up the final few days of the semester by cleaning up my blog posts and making sure I have all my comments done! I attempted to get my Word and Excel Experts certifications... and even though I did not get my Excel Expert badge, I am Word Expert certified!!

  10. I think I am someone who has gotten better with passwords. I have them hidden somewhere on physical media, and even then, I tend to update them randomly and document the change that way I know that my information is safe and secure.

I will finish up the last few days, polishing anything necessary before the deadline. Whether that's discussions, blog posts, etc. I am quite content with where I am, but I know that there are little things I can fix here and there! :]

  11. I probably will stick to my current way I save my passwords because I thankfully have not been hacked. I will for sure look at different ways to save sensitive information.

I will catch up on all the discussions and reply to my classmates.

  12. Yes, the article definitely made me want to manage my passwords better. I’ll start using two-factor authentication more often and stop reusing the same passwords. A password manager is probably a smart move too.

I’m planning to finish strong on my blog post replies! I want to end the class proud of what I’ve done.

  13. After reading the article I for sure would want to manage my passwords in a better way! I have a good system but it really inspired me to make it more secure!

I will finish strong by finishing the small things I have left and turning everything in. I am proud of how far I've come!!
